Corporate Donors
FREE accepts general support from private foundations, corporations, and individuals. However, we do not accept any corporate support for federal judges conferences. We reimburse judges' expenses (e.g., lodging, meals, and travel) with funds only from foundations whose principal founder is deceased, whose operation and oversight are independent of any corporate entity, and which do not participate in litigation in the federal courts.
Currently, foundations that meet these criteria include the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust of Vancouver, Washington and the Alex C. Walker Foundation of Pittsburgh.
About 69 percent of FREE’s 2009 income came from private foundations, 26 percent from corporations, and the rest from individuals. FREE does not accept money from any government agency. Nor do we conduct contract research.
FREE maintains a diverse base of support to ensure that no supporter improperly influences our activities. Hence, it is our policy to publicly identify all corporate and foundation donors and the amounts of their gifts. We do not publicize individual donors.
We are sensitive to the potential for conflicts of interest, both actual and apparent, and structure our activities to avoid both. Our programs are co-sponsored by Montana State University and are in full compliance with the Judicial Conference's private seminars disclosure policy.
