He is a writer and editor with a longtime interest in natural resource policies of the American West. In 1984, he founded the acclaimed journal Northern Lights Magazine, and in 1996, the new NLI journal, the Chronicle of Community. His books include Inside the Environmental Movement and Voices from the Environmental Movement, both from Island Press. With Deborah Clow, he edited Northern Lights: A Selection of New Writing from the American West (Vintage, 1994); with Dr. John A. Baden, he edited The Next West: Public Lands, Community and Economy in the American West (Island Press, 1997). His forthcoming book (with Carolyn Servid) is The Book of the Tongass (Milkweed Editions, 1999), a 12-essay anthology created by Gallatin Writers, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to new literary perspectives on the American West. In addition to his work with Northern Lights, he serves as visiting professor of environmental studies at the University of Montana, where he teaches seminars in writing and natural resource policy. |
